Beaverlodge siblings both earn titles at curling Canadian Open

Sunday was a big day for curling fans out of Beaverlodge. Local siblings Geoff Walker and Stephanie Enright were each a part of the winning teams at the Grand Slam of Curling Meridian Canadian Open in North Battleford, Saskatchewan.

Walker is the lead for Team Brad Gushue, which captured the men’s title with an 8-3 victory over Sweden’s Niklas Edin. The team with Mark Nichols and Brett Gallant also won in 2014.

On the women’s side, Enright threw lead stones for Casey Scheidegger, who beat Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni 5-4 Sunday. Scheidegger was labelled a “giant slayer” at the open, after toppling Rachel Homan, Jennifer Jones and Val Sweeting to advance to the finals. Also on the Lethbridge team is Casey’s sister Jessie Scheidegger and Cary-Anne McTaggart of Grande Prairie.
