Group of Grande Prairie students host walkout in protest to alleged comments made by teacher

Just over a dozen students from St, John Paul II Catholic High School in Grande Prairie held a walkout in protest of comments made by a teacher online.

Students say the walkout is a response towards comments allegedly made by a teacher within the school district, denying residential schools and their harm.

One of the students who attended the protest is 17 year-old Paige Aubichon. Aubichon is a current student at the UWC Pearson College in British Columbia, and is a current member of the Traditional Paths Society and the Indigenous Youth Council.

During the protest, Aubichon held up a sign that reads, “Proud of the youth on Treaty 8.”

Aubichon says that she is saddened that residential school denialism continues, but is grateful to be home to stand alongside her fellow dancer and friends.

In a letter sent to parents of students that attend the school, JPII says that the social media posts do not refelect the values of the school community.

“JPII is aware of the recent social media posts regarding the Indigenous community. These posts do not reflect the values of our school community. While we cannot make any additional comments on the situation, please know we continue to work to provide a safe environment for all of our learners and families. Student services including mental health and the Indigenous Liaison are available for students who wish to seek additional support. We appreciate your support as we continue to grow in Truth and Reconciliation.”

The protest was held on Tuesday October 13.
