Illegal players forces Athletics to forfeit game

The Grande Prairie Athletics have had to forfeit their most recent game. They beat the Valleyview Jets 11-3 Saturday night, but the North Peace Hockey League has ruled they used an illegal player.

The A’s had gotten permission from Hockey Alberta to use affiliated goaltender Xavier Burghardt in net, but the governing body hadn’t checked to see whether he was eligible. Burghardt plays for the Grande Prairie Junior A Storm, and teams aren’t allowed to use affiliates that are higher than Junior B.

Other than who won and lost, all other stats will stay the same. The Athletics can appeal the decision.
