UPDATE: The provincial championship against the Calgary Rams will be held August 30th in Edmonton at Ellerslie Park starting at 2 p.m.
Congratulations are in order for the Grande Prairie Sirens. The women’s rugby team has won its first ever Edmonton Rugby Union Second Division city championship with a 32-24 win over the Pirates on the road Saturday. Last year, they came second versus St. Albert in the finals at home.
The weekend wasn’t without its hiccups, though, as all 14 members were briefly stuck in the elevator of their hotel Saturday, delaying the start of the game. The squad will next play the Calgary Rams on August 30th for the top spot in the province, with the time and location to be announced.
