Province, fire department hands out yearly awards

A number of local emergency responders were honoured by the province and their community earlier today.

Five Alberta Emergency Services Medals were handed out, along with the community service, dispatcher and fire fighter of the year awards.

Lieutenant Russell Driver was named Firefighter of the year.

“I believe I was nominated for a lot of the work with the building management program.  It is a program where we help our employees who get hurt.  It is a physical job and firefighters can not do it unless they are physically able.  So to help them come back 100 percent is always a little bit of a scary process at times.  So I am here to help guys out with that.”

Driver says also had a few opportunities to serve as acting captain in the past year.

He has been with the Grande Prairie Fire Department for 10 years.

No injuries after school bus collides with pickup truck

Traffic is moving once again on 100th avenue after a two vehicle collision earlier today.

According to RCMP, a north bound pick up truck on 102nd street was attempting to turn west onto 100th avenue, when it collided with a school bus.

Fortunately there were no students on the bus at the time, and neither driver was injured.

The accident occured around 1:10 this afternoon.

No charges will be laid.

Maple Sugar Festival a go for this weekend

Organizers of this year’s Maple Sugar Festival say the cold weather will not stop their 16th annual event from going ahead.

It’s set for tomorrow afternoon from noon to 5 at Muskoseepi Park.

Nathalie Roufosse with the French Canadian Association in Grande Prairie says they do have activities planned for indoors, including a musical group from Edmonton.

“They are really well known in Edmonton, and they do a lot of shows either together or seperate, but they are really good.  We have the big bouncy castles for the kids, we have face painting inside as well as some crafts.”

Outdoor activities such as sleigh rides, snow shoeing, and the serving of taffy on the snow are still a go.

Admission is 5 dollars a person or 20 dollars per family.

Grande Prairie #1 city in Canada for work, according to Adzuna

When it comes to finding work in Canada, Grande Prairie is the place to be.

A new report from a website for job seekers, www.adzuna.ca, ranked 50 cities across the country based on unemployment and job availability.

Our city topped the list with 1.38 job seekers per vacancy, three times higher than Toronto, which took the number 10 spot.

5 of the top ten cities in Canada are located in Alberta.

Last day to hand in Peace Wapiti school survey

Parents of children in the Peace Wapiti Public School Division have until the end of the day to send back a survey on how schools are performing.

Superintendent Sheldon Rowe hopes to receive as many back as possible to learn more about how the school district is doing.

Parents are being asked to rate schools on a number of factors from the quality of education to the level of parental involvement.

The anonymous surveys were sent out by mail and are due back today.

Grande Prairie man wins $100,000 on lottery ticket

A Grande Prairie man is $100,000 richer after winning on a Super BlackJack Scratch N’ Win ticket.

Levi Krull bought the winning ticket at the Southview Freson’s IGA.

He plans to invest his winnings.

Mother pleads guilty in death of child drowned in homebrew

A Fox Lake woman has pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal negligence causing death after her infant daughter drowned in a batch of homebrew.

The Canadian Press reports the 10 month old was found by her 12 year old brother when he came home from school last spring.

Viola Ribbonleg was reportedly asleep at the time, and had been seen drinking earlier.

The brew was in a crate beside a couch.

The 32 year old woman will be sentenced for failing to provide adequate child care in Fort Vermillion on July 15th.

2014 property assessment notices mailed out

Grande Prairie residents can expect to find their property assessments in their mailbox next week.

They were all mailed out earlier today.

If property owners feel their assessment does not properly reflect market value, they can file an objection at City Hall by April 30th, although complaints about the tax rate will not be received.

Residents can also discuss their assessment with an assessor during business hours.

Peace River train station gets restoration grant from province

A Peace River based project is one of 58 across the province to receive funding this year through the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation heritage grants program.

The town of Peace River is getting 12,600 dollars towards restoration work on the Northern Alberta Railway Station.

Built in 1916 to serve the newly built Peace River Crossing rail line, the station is one of the few two-story railway stations from that era remaining in the province.

The money is a historic resource conservation grant, coming from AHRF’s Heritage Preservation Partnership program.

Mounties looking for missing trailer full of snowmobiles

City RCMP are looking for a trailer and three snow machines that were stolen from a Crystal Ridge home last weekend.

The 2008 Black Mirage trailer was taken from a driveway sometime between 6pm last Friday, and 10am the following day.

The missing sleds include a 2013 Polaris 800 Pro, a 2007 Ski Doo Summit and a 2006 Ski Doo Summit.

Other items such as a generator, a chest full of tools, avalanche beacons, and snow shovels with probes were also in the trailer.

Total cost of all items stolen is believed to be around 60,000 dollars.

Theft of a lottery ticket prompts charges for Fairview man

A Fairview man has been charged by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission with the theft of a lottery ticket.

The charges, theft over $5000 and fraud over $5000, stem from a complaint the AGLC received about an attempt to cash in a stolen lottery ticket.

Representatives with the organization want to remind everyone who does purchase a ticket to make sure they sign the back, and check the winning numbers themselves.

The man will appear in provincial court later this month.

Fashion show benefiting local literacy initiatives

Just in time for Mother’s Day, the Grande Prairie Chapter of Executive Women International is planning its fifth annual Hot Heels Fashion Show for May 10th.

The annual event raises money for local literacy initiatives and scholarships, as well as supports local clothing stores and designers.

Chapter President Tiffany Clark says this year they’re excited to feature Marley Davis Designs.

“We’ve had designers in the past that their fashions were a little bit more high fashion or glitzy, and a lot of Marley’s designs are very much something that you would see women in Grande Prairie wearing.”

Tickets for the event cost $50 and are available at the Crystal Centre or by emailing [email protected].

Fashion lovers can also sign up to design a custom pair of shoes that will be auctioned off.

Along with the fashion show, the ladies-only event will also feature a trade show and a speaker from Reading University, the recipient of the majority of the funds raised.

The program helps students struggling with their reading and writing skills.

Nominations for Leaders of Tomorrow Awards wanted

If you know a teenager from the city or county that is making a difference in their community through volunteering, then the Volunteer Services Bureau wants to hear from you.

It is currently accepting nominations for its annual Leaders of Tomorrow Awards.

Executive Director Carol Anne Pasemko argues youth are capable of contributing to their hometowns.

“They know that there’s some people that say, ‘Well, they’re kids so they can’t really do much,’ but you know, they are the next generation, they are the ones that are going to make a difference, and we were all youth at one time and volunteering for stuff too.”

Nomination forms are available through the Volunteer Services Bureau office, or online at www.gpvsb.com.

The deadline is April 4th, with winners recognized at a special luncheon later this year.

GP Catholic Students exceed fundraising goal for Habitat for Humanity

Grande Prairie Catholic School District students have reached and surpassed their goal of raising $100,000 for Habitat for Humanity.

Two years ago students set their goal, which is the minimum required for the materials needed to build a home, and have now surpassed it by over $17,000.

Superintendent Karl German says he is very proud of his students.

“It was a dream to try and raise $100,000 so that somebody in the area could receive a home, as well as somebody in El Salvador would receive a home. I don’t think we actually thought we’d ever even hit a target of $100,000, and to be $117,000 is amazing, and we’re just so pleased with the work the kids did.”

Germann says while the additional money will go towards another Habitat for Humanity project, students have moved onto some smaller fundraising projects for the time being.

2014 Dream Home to open tomorrow

The Rotary Club of Grande Prairie’s 2014 Dream Home is nearly ready to be unveiled.

The home, part of a 1.1 million dollar prize package, can be found in Carriage Lane Estates, not too far from last year’s home.

The house will officially open up for those looking to sneak a peak as of tomorrow from 6 to 9 pm.

After that, the home will be open every Thursday and Friday from 6-9, along with Saturday’s from 11 to 5.

Tickets are $100 each, 3 for $250, or 5 for $400.

Free Ag Knowledge event to revolve around agricultural cycles

The next Farm Credit Canada Ag Knowledge Exchange event in our area aims to help local producers work with agricultural trends.

Consultant Kevin Hursch will be leading the discussion with analyst John DePutter, who Hursch says will be taking the group through market fundamentals.

“I get to try to bring it all down to on-farm economic strategies and what individual producers might be able to do in their particular situation to better their financial returns.”

Among the hot topics will be the current grain backlog, and the choices producers can make to ensure they come out on top.

Suspects in truck theft and kidnapping identified

Grande Prairie RCMP has released the names of two of the people accused of stealing a truck with an infant in the back seat Tuesday.

26 year old Keisha Horseman and 22 year old David Michael Smith – both from Grande Prairie – are facing theft of a motor vehicle, kidnapping, abandoning a child, and possession charges and are in police custody.

A 14 year old from Edmonton has also been charged and released, but cannot be named.

They will next appear in court on March 3rd.

The trio was picked up after the stolen truck was spotted at a forestry products mill south of the city.

Seven month old Addison was found in her car seat on the front step of a home south of the city.

Northwest road network consult set for mid March

City planners are looking for public input on road development in the Northwest end of Grande Prairie.

A few alternatives have been drawn up for the eight and a quarter sections.

Manager of Traffic Engineering Norman Kyle says it’s an important area that has been under consideration for quite some time.

“So we’ve been working with the landowners here for quite a few months to come up with alternatives and options for road networks, so this would cover everything north of Gateway, south of 132 Ave, east of 116 Street, and west of 108 Street. ”

The presentation is on March 18 at the Muskoseepi Park Pavilion from 4 to 6 pm.

Council for Lifelong Learning reviewing its practices to mark a milestone

Adult learners and those who support them may be interested in attending a community consultation with the Council for Lifelong Learning Thursday night.

The agency is in its 30th year and is conducting a community needs assessment.

Board Chair David Olinger argues one is necessary as Grande Prairie’s population continues to grow.

“And although we offer english as a second language and workplace learning, and a number of different programs and services, we want to be sure we’re really in tune with what the community is really needing.”

The public is encouraged to attend with stakeholders. The event take place at Centre 2000 at 6:30 p.m.

Charges to be laid in truck theft and kidnapping case

Police say charges will be laid against three people, after a truck with a seven month old child in the back was taken from a Royal Oaks area home on Tuesday.

Charges of kidnapping, theft of a motor vehicle, abandoning a child, possession of stolen property, and possession of a weapon will be laid against a 26 year old woman and a 22 year old man, both of Grande Prairie, and a 14 year old young offender from Edmonton.

The trio were picked up after the stolen truck was spotted at a forestry products mill south of the city.

The child was found in her car seat on the front step of a home south of the city.
