Province, fire department hands out yearly awards

A number of local emergency responders were honoured by the province and their community earlier today.

Five Alberta Emergency Services Medals were handed out, along with the community service, dispatcher and fire fighter of the year awards.

Lieutenant Russell Driver was named Firefighter of the year.

“I believe I was nominated for a lot of the work with the building management program.  It is a program where we help our employees who get hurt.  It is a physical job and firefighters can not do it unless they are physically able.  So to help them come back 100 percent is always a little bit of a scary process at times.  So I am here to help guys out with that.”

Driver says also had a few opportunities to serve as acting captain in the past year.

He has been with the Grande Prairie Fire Department for 10 years.
