City to host youth leadership retreat

The city of Grande Prairie is hosting a two day youth leadership retreat next week to for high school students in the area.

Facilitators from ME TO WE will be on hand, and Youth Services Supervisor Dale Tiedemann says they want to encourage young people to look for ways to be active in their community.

“So the facilitators will be here, running interactive activities, and leadership lessons for youth.  And then at the end, the youth will actually be able to create an action plan as to they can further youth initiatives in the city as well.”

The workshop, which will be held at the GP Museum next Thursday and Friday, is free to attend but students are encouraged to sign up quickly as registration is limited.

Home builders provide funds for trades training trailer

The Canadian Homebuilders Association of Grande Prairie is helping to bring more trades training to students around the Peace country.

The group donated 65-hundred dollars towards the purchase of a mobile carpentry classroom for the Peace Wapiti School Division.

President Nathan Davis says the trades trailer will travel to smaller communities around county.

“Communities where the school might not have this shop facility need it to offer an apprenticeship program.  And it really helps the students get a leg up on their apprenticeship and get started towards a trade, and creates very employable youth as they.come out of school.”

P-W-S-D Superintendent Sheldon Rowe says he expects the trailer will be ready to roll out for this fall.

Several events lined up for dino museum ribbon cutting weekend

The schedule of events for the official ribbon cutting ceremony weekend at the Philip J Currie Dinosaur Museum is starting to take shape.

Pipestone Creek Dinosaur Initiative Executive Director Brian Brake says it begins Thursday, August 7th, with a late afternoon event at Grande Prairie city hall.

“That includes the possibility of the keys to the city being presented to the Aykroyd family for all of the attention and positive press that they have given to this area.  On Friday, we are going to take the celebrities and our major sponsors and we are going to go out to the Pipestone Creek and we are going to do some digging for bones.”

That day will wrap up with a private fundraising dinner.

Saturday, August 9th will feature the museum ribbon cutting, dedication of the Aykroyd family theatre, and the Amber ball fundraiser.

Downtown association hands out awards during AGM

The Grande Prairie Downtown Association held it’s annual general meeting this week, which included the presentation of it’s yearly awards.

Midwest On Main owner Bob Stevenson was named Downtowner of the Year, while Alison Gustafson of Victoria’s Attic was presented the Art Ouelette award for exceptional upkeep of her property.

The Association also presented a special Historic Destination award in honour of Grande Prairie’s 100th anniversary, to Dayna Nelson of D-Luxe Style.

Nelson was recognized for renovating several historic properties on her location.

Peace region wearing pink in stand against bullying

Schools and businesses across the Peace region will be sporting pink today in support of a national anti-bullying campaign.

Pink Shirt Day was inspired by two Nova Scotian teens who stood up for a younger student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to class.

Albertans are being encouraged to take photos with their friends and colleagues wearing pink and share them on social media with the hashtag #albertapink.

The Encana Events Centre in Dawson Creek is taking part for the second year in a row, and has challenged other businesses to do the same and sign a anti-bullying pledge on their website.

Local schools are holding assemblies and other activities today to talk about healthy relationships, all while wearing pink.

Great Britain's Eve Muirhead competing in Grande Prairie

Olympic bronze medalist and reigning world women’s curling champ Eve Muirhead will be in Grande Prairie next month for the Pomeroy Inn and Suites Prairie Showdown Cash Spiel.

Muirhead will also take part in a special celebrity skins game event while here.

Hurry Hard for Hope will take place March 26th, and will raise funds for the Hannah Ouelette Memorial Fund, which assists the Suicide Prevention Resource Centre with its efforts in teen suicide prevention.

Suspects in car theft and abduction in police custody

Three suspects are now in police custody in relation to the theft of a truck with an infant in it earlier this afternoon.

Thanks to a tip from a member of the public and a helicopter search, Grande Prairie RCMP was able to find the stolen Dodge Ram at a forestry products mill south of the city.

After a foot chase, three people were apprehended around 4:15 p.m. but no charges have been laid so far.

An Amber Alert was issued after the vehicle seven month old Addison in was stolen while left running.

She later turned up in a car seat on the porch of a rural residence south of Grande Prairie.

She appears to be uninjured, but was taken to hospital to be checked out as a precaution.

City looking to become more competitive with County in development

The City of Grande Prairie wants to make sure it’s competitive with the County when it comes to development.

City planner Stuart Wraight recently completed a study that showed several ways in which the City was more expensive to build.

One of those was the Transportation Off-Site Levy Bylaw.

“There are significant differences between urban and rural environments, so as further discussion that administration will be reviewing the transportation levy by-law, which will be a work in progress.”

City staff are now looking into drafting a land use bylaw that would include a “rural industrial” district with similar development costs to the County.

New contract for Peace River School Division superintendent

Peace River School Division has approved a five year contract extension for its Superintendent of Schools.

Board chair Darren Kuester says the results of a recent evaluation of Paul Bennett’s work with the division was very positive.

He says they are particularly impressed with his approach to management.

“Paul is of the same view that relationships and people are everything.  If you have good relationships and good working relationships with people, then you can accomplish what you need to do.”

The new deal, which would keep Bennett with the division through to the summer of 2019, still needs to be approved by the provincial Education minister.

Record month for housing sales in Grande Prairie

Last month was a record one for total dollar value of home sales in Grande Prairie.

According to the Grande Prairie and Area Association of Realtors, 54.5 million dollars worth of home sales were recorded last month, a 22 percent increase from January of last year, and a record for the month of January.

That despite a slight decrease in the number of homes sold in the month when compared to figures from last year.

A total of 168 homes were sold last month, with an average price of over 324 thousand dollars.

AMBER ALERT issued for 7 month old Addison from Grande Prairie

UPDATE: Baby Addison has been found.

A 7 month old girl named Addison has been abducted from the Royal Oaks area of Grande Prairie between 12:30 and 1:00 p.m. today.

This child was abducted by a person that stole a truck from a residence.

Addison is 7 months old and was wearing pink pants, no shoes, a pink tunic, with blue and pink hearts on it.

They were last seen in a 2010 light brown two tone Dodge truck, Alberta licence NED 553.

The truck has built in tool boxes on the box and a pink sticker in the back tailgate that says “baby on board”.

The truck has black steel rims and is a four door.

The truck departed in an unknown direction.

Do not approach the suspect.

Baby abducted in stolen vehicle found on porch of rural residence

The Amber Alert for seven month old Addison has been cancelled after she was found in a car seat on the porch of a rural residence south of Grande Prairie.

She is reportedly uninjured, but is being taken to hospital just in case.

The stolen vehicle she was abducted in has not yet been found.

It is a 4-door two-tone light brown 2010 Dodge Ram with Alberta licence plate NED 553.

Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP.

Dates set for JDA Kings NWJHL semifinal

Dates have been announced for the two North West Junior Hockey League semifinal series.

Fairview and North Peace will kick off their best of seven set tomorrow night in Peace River and the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings will host Fort St. John in game one of their series Friday night at the County Sportsplex.

Games two for the JDA Kings will go in Fort St. John on March 1st and 2nd, while game three will be back in Clairmont on March 2nd and game four in Fort St. John on March 4th.

Further games will alternate cities if needed.

Truck stolen with infant inside

UPDATE 2: The baby has been found.

UPDATE: RCMP has confirmed this is not a case of parental abduction. The vehicle was left running outside a home when it was stolen. It is a two-tone, four-door vehicle with a “Baby on Board” sticker on the back.

RCMP is looking for the public’s help in finding a truck that was stolen from a Royal Oaks residence.

The light brown, 2010 Dodge Ram was taken from the area near 123rd Avenue and 105th Street.

There is a 7 month old child inside of the truck, which has a licence plate of NED 553.

Wildrose MLA holding town hall on grain backlog in Sexsmith

The ever increasing grain backlog, and the challenges that it is providing to local farmers trying to get their crops to market is sure to be a popular topic at a special town hall meeting tomorrow.

Wildrose MLA Drew Barnes brings his party’s Grains Tour to Sexsmith Wednesday, looking to hear all concerns that local farmers have.

The Cypress/Medicine Hat MLA says it is time to figure out who is at fault, and to get it solved so grain can start moving once again.

“It’s time to get to the bottom of this and it’s time to get grain moving. I’ve heard a lot of concern that so much oil is being moved by rail now that it’s been a problem, and I think it’s important to make sure that we get this moving.”

Barnes says he also wants to hear about other issues for local producers, such as Country of Origin Labelling, access to market, and specialty product challenges.

The meeting begins at noon tomorrow at the Sexsmith Community Centre.

Engineering contract for new sports fields, Eastlink Centre parking awarded

The City has hired an engineering firm to oversee the development of a new football field and parking lots near the Eastlink Centre.

Community Services Director Garry Roth says the new parking lots will move between 80 and 100 staff vehicles to make more room for customers.

“As well as it also creates a new parking area on the west side of the Eastlink Centre, kind of west over where the new high school is being built. The intent of that would be overflow parking for the Eastlink Centre as well as providing parking for future football field development that’s going to happen on the west.”

The RFP has been awarded to GP-based ISL Engineering and Land Services for just more than $330,000.

In total the work in the area should come in around $5 million.

It’s hoped construction will start in the spring.

Grande Prairie part of province-wide community builder initiative

Grande Prairie has been selected to take part in the “Becoming a Community Leader” community capacity building initiative.

The 15 week professional development program is free of charge for anyone in the city to take part in.

Donelda Laing, the City’s Community Social Development Manager, says it is an online program with components for both adults and high school students.

“You just have to register online, and then you get the five video streaming events, you get coaching, there’s blogs, there’s emails. He follows it up with a lot of learning tools.”

More than 20 local community organizations have thrown their support behind this initiative, which Laing says was a big reason why Grande Prairie was selected to take part in it.

It begins March 28th.

City supports conceptual corridor between Peace River and Fort McMurray

The City of Grande Prairie is formally supporting the concept of a corridor between Fort McMurray that would at least see a highway built between the cities.

Councillor Kevin McLean argues a link to up north is overdue and should be a high priority for the province.

“I believe within the next ten years that road should be built. There should be no delays, the road should be built, and it should be part and parcel of taxpayers and the industry.”

Also approved at Monday’s City Council meeting was the renewal of eight Fire Dispatch Agreements and the continuation of the Community Garden in its current location.

Trial for surgeon accused of sexual assault set for 2015

Doctor Romelito Cruz won’t face trial for sexual assault for another year.

The ear, nose, and throat surgeon’s case has been delayed several times, but a not guilty plea has been entered and trial date set for February 2015.

Cruz is accused of innappropriately examining female patients, stemming from two complaints in 2007 and 2008, with one involving a 16 year old girl.

He was suspended for six months in 2012/2013 and a chaperone would have to be present whenever Delacruz was doing exams on females.

Grande Prairie Service Superstars recognized

Thanks to nominations from the public, a number of local service workers have been recognized for their extra efforts.

At a gala eveover the weekend, Bernie Benson at the City of Grande Prairie, Maria Saraum of The L Spa and Robert Noel of TriTech Safety were among those given Service Superstar Awards.

Also among the winners were Holly Leman, a server at Tony Roma’s, Brenda Frederick of Southview Safeway, and Heather Lappenbush from the Best Western.

Debbie Kelly of WestJet was given the top honours and was the grande prize winner.

Kelly was nominated by members of the public, who said she helped with extra questions and “went above and beyond providing excellent customer service.”

Ballot boxes were set up by the Regional Tourism Association last summer, and nominations were also taken online.
