Beaverlodge applies for disaster relief funding

The town of Beaverlodge has applied for disaster relief funding from the province to help with flood damage costs from the storm on August 1st. Mayor Gary Rycroft says that if funding is approved it will go towards damages that aren’t covered by insurance companies.

“The Town’s damage is being taken care of by the Town of Beaverlodge and residential people will have to deal with their own insurance companies… We are also going to try and get some relief money from the province to offset the damage that isn’t covered by insurance.”

The town reported 45.5 millimetres of rain over a two hour period, which flooded Highway 43 and closed Highway 723 from Beaverlodge to Valhalla for a number of hours. The Town was put in a local state of emergency, and Rycroft says dozens homes could have been impacted by the flooding.

“We don’t have any numbers yet but I’m guessing probably in the neighbourhood of 100 homes that have been affected in one way or another.”

In the next few days, 30-yard bins will be delivered throughout the area to aid in the cleanup effort. The town is asking residents affected by the flood to contact them via email at town@beaverlodge.ca so that they can track the number of homes affected by the storm.
