Arrest warrant issued for Halliburton shooting suspect ahead of trial

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a man accused of the shooting at Halliburton in Clairmont three years ago. Former employee Panagiotis Michalakakos was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday but didn’t show up.

Alberta Justice says a warrant is still outstanding, and Chief Crown Prosecutor Steven Hinkley has confirmed the trial set to start March 19th has been cancelled and witnesses have been called off. Once Michalakakos is in custody, the matter will move forward.

Reports that a man was shooting a rifle in the Clairmont Industrial Park first came in to Grande Prairie RCMP just before 8 p.m. on March 31, 2015. A number of businesses went into lockdown, and it wasn’t until it was almost midnight that another Halliburton employee made contact with the suspect and was able to help police start negotiations.

Michalakakos surrendered to police, and was charged with numerous offences. RCMP say a hand gun and assault style rifle was seized at the scene. No shots were fired by officers, and no injuries were reported.
