Call don’t cut! City of GP reminds residents to stay aware of property lines and tree ownership

The City of Grande Prairie is reminding residents to stay aware of their property lines when it comes to tree placement.

According to the city, a portion of land in front and sometimes alongside every titled property is considered “city-owned,” known as the “Boulevard” and before taking on any construction or landscaping project, residents are encouraged to confirm the location of property lines.

The city maintains that trees located on private land are the responsibility of the property owner and therefore, will not receive any maintenance, removal, or clean-up efforts on privately owned trees.

Grande Prairie Parks Director Kase DeVries says understanding tree ownership is a critical factor in the maintenance and beautification of Grande Prairie.

“All residents should be aware of their responsibilities when it comes to performing any maintenance or removal of a tree near your property, especially those situated on City boulevards,” he says.

Residents concerned about property lines and tree ownership can contact the city for assistance, and officials are asking all property owners to call Access GP at 3-1-1 before cutting down any Boulevard tree.
