Trumpeter swans taken off threatened species list

Good news for the official symbol of Grande Prairie: the trumpeter swan is no longer on Alberta’s threatened species list.

While is it still considered vulnerable, it is not immediately in danger, and is now identified as a species of special concern.

Swans come to nest in the Grande Prairie area in the summer, earning it the nickname “Swan City”.

According to the City, it was declared the “Home of the Trumpeter Swan” in 1958 after Grande Prairie received its charter.

At the same time, four other animals with declining populations have been added to the list, including the Athabasca Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout, Pygmy Whitefish, and Western Grebe.
