Crews to begin construction on Crystal Lake Arboretum in the coming days

Grande Prairie city crews will be beginning construction on the Crystal Lake Arboretum.

The city says the construction will be bringing new tree groves, walking trails and interpretive features to the Crystal Lake Park.

The construction will be taking place south of the Bike Skills Park, the city added that the Crystal Lake Arboretum will transform an open area of the park into a welcoming space where residents and visitors can explore native tree species, and enjoy nature.

The arboretum will feature a collection of native tree species with interpretive signage throughout the site, highlighting each species’ role in local ecosystems, traditional Indigenous knowledge and uses.

“Crystal Lake Park is already one of Grande Prairie’s most enjoyed outdoor spaces, and the arboretum will add another reason for residents and visitors to explore everything the park has to offer,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “This project creates a beautiful new place to enjoy, learn and connect with nature while celebrating the forests that make our region unique.”

Officials say the project is a tangible example of the city’s Urban Forest Strategy in action, and helps supports the city’s 2026–2029 Strategic Plan.

Construction is anticipated to be complete by the end of August, weather permitting. While the work is underway, temporary localized trail closures or short detours may be required within the project area. Access to surrounding park amenities, including the Bike Skills Park, will be maintained wherever possible.

Residents are encouraged to follow posted signage and respect temporary barriers while visiting Crystal Lake Park during construction.
