Council has approved an additional $85,557 for the Salmond Fire Hall building envelope remediation project.
When Grande Prairie city council approved the 2023 capital budget, it allocated $150,000 for stucco replacement. The original request included both building envelope and roof work, but the approved funding was limited to the building envelope.
Officials said the fire hall has experienced ongoing deterioration of its exterior stucco cladding system, with visible cracking and potential moisture intrusion.
A revised remediation strategy was presented to council on Monday, March 30. The proposal includes installing a metal siding cladding system over the existing stucco.
Administration said the new siding is expected to enhance the building’s appearance, better withstand weather and reduce maintenance needs over time.
Mayor Jackie Clayton said those who drive by the fire hall will see the stucco has been chipping and falling.
“Although it will cost more up-front, the life span of this surfacing will be extremely longer than the existing stucco,” Clayton said.
The additional funding will come from the city’s facility renewal reserve.
