City forecasting $2.8M year-end surplus

After a $416,000 budget shortfall in Q1 the city is now anticipating to see a $2.85 million year-end surplus according to the Q2 forecast.

In Q1, the City of Grande Prairie saw a $416,000 shortfall because of having higher snow-clearing costs then expected, due to a above-average snowfall in the first part of the year.

However, in Q2, the city saw a surplus primarily due to lower RCMP enforcement contract costs, due to the current transition to the Grande Prairie Police Service.

The city says because the transition is on an accelerated schedule, costs on contracts with the RCMP have been cut.

Chief Financial Officer for the city, Danielle Whiteway says they have seen some financial growth in some other areas as well.

“We have seen some positive revenue growth in our development services.”

“We forecast with what we know at the time, and obviously that’s why forecasts are produced quarterly.”

The $2.85 million represents nearly 1.3 per cent of the total city budget.
