The City of Grande Prairie is advocating to the province on solutions to help minimize electricity bills around Grande Prairie.
Mayor Jackie Clayton mentioned that council has heard from the community over the years about high-costing electricity bills in the region. Clayton says that the city and other municipalities that are in the ATCO service area have been coming together to talk about the disparity across the province.
“You’ll find on your utility bill that your distribution in the Atco service areas are extremely high. The gap between what Edmonton and Calgary pay, or areas that are not in the Atco service area, is continuing to increase. We are almost four times more in the distribution charge in our bill every month, then some of those areas.”
Clayton said after talking with the provincial Minister of affordability and utilities, Minister Nathan Neudorf, that there is solutions to the issue.
“One of the solutions would be if every household in Edmonton and Calgary were to pay approximately seven dollars per month that would completely equalize the entire province,” Clayton said.
Clayton says that council will continue to talk with Minister Neudorf, and will keep advocating towards the province to find a solution.
“We are very optimistic that the province is going to come forward with a solution that will help address this disparity. It doesn’t make sense that it costs almost four times for your distribution in Grande Prairie compared to Edmonton and Calgary.”
