Housing starts less than half of 2014’s pace

Housing starts in Grande Prairie have fallen behind 50 per cent of where they were last year. Construction has started on 111 new homes this year, drastically behind the 235 the city saw in the first seven months of 2014.

In July, multiple family homes were again the only positive, up from 12 last year to 20. At the same time there were only 15 new single family homes started, down from 37.

A Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Analyst says numbers are also dropping in Edmonton. The trend is expected to continue as Alberta’s economy stays soft.
