RCMP offers suggestions to help prevent winter crime

The Alberta RCMP is reminding residents about the risks of property crimes as temperatures start to drop for the winter.

Mounties say that as seasonal properties, recreational areas, and farms start to experience reduced use during the fall and winter months, potential criminals may target locations where there are fewer people around.

Officers say that they suggest residents to store off-road vehicles so that they are out of sight. Officers add that ideal spots may be in a locked garage, shed, or storage unit.

Mounties suggest emptying fuel tanks when possible and use physical barriers, such as fencing or wheel clamps, to make vehicles more difficult to remove.

RCMP added that securing farm equipment in a locked building would be ideal, and to use wheel clamps or remove batteries when equipment is not in use, and to keep keys in a separate, secure location.

In case something of yours is stolen, having a record of serial numbers and equipment descriptions, could help police.

Removing valuables from seasonal properties, including expensive tools and electronics, is another thing officers suggest.

Before leaving your property unattended, police say to ensure all doors, windows, gates, and outbuildings are properly secured.
