84 Avenue road construction results in lane closures until mid-August

Starting Tuesday, June 20th full road reconstruction on the westbound lanes of 84 Avenue will have parts of the road between 108 Street and 116th Street closed periodically until mid-August.

The first phase of the project will be on 84 Avenue between 111A Street and 116th Street, and westbound traffic will be rerouted to the eastbound lanes at 111A Street. During this crossover, the two eastbound bound lanes will be used to accommodate two-way traffic. The second phase between 108 Street and 111A Street will have a similar crossover, with the westbound lanes providing two-way access.

According to the city, “short-term road closures are expected, and roadway access will only be granted to local traffic.” The speed limit in the area will also be reduced to 30 kilometres an hour while construction is underway. Drivers are reminded to use caution in these areas, obey all signage, and expect possible traffic delays.

The full construction work includes road structure replacement, concrete replacements, minor storm sewer repairs, line painting, and landscaping. According to the City of Grande Prairie, the reconstruction is expected to enhance the roadways and support planning for future traffic volumes as part of the city’s economic preparedness as they “set the stage for continued growth.”
