Grande Prairie Regional College Indigenous graduate making his mark

Morgan Zoe, an Indigenous artist and graduate of the GPRC Visual Arts program, is slowly but surely making his mark with his artwork.

Zoe says that he wanted to be an artist for as long as he can remember.

“It all started when I was a kid. I feel like I have a natural knack for it and it’s something I’ve kept up with my whole life,” he explains. “When I think about my inspirations, my uncle is a big one. I would admire and imitate his drawings, as he was doing them in front of me.”

Zoe says that his art is also a form of communication and he feels like through it he can share a message.

“It’s mainly just how I see the world and how I interpret it. Sometimes I draw the past, but also the present, and what I see for the future,” he says.

Zoe recently had the honour of having his design selected for the Purolator Light up the Holidays campaign, which aims to promote young, emerging Canadian artists.

“Some of my friends went out and bought the packages just to see them. It was also great to be a small part of delivering holiday cheer to people receiving packages with my artwork on them,” he says.

Zoe says he hopes that other Indigenous people will follow his lead and enroll in post-secondary education. “It’s extremely rare for Indigenous people to attend any sort of College or University,” he adds.

Since graduating from GPRC, he moved back home to the Northwest Territories. Zoe and his partner, Vanessa, are also expecting their first child in April of 2022.

You can find more of his work on Instagram.
