RCMP warns of CRA telemarketing scam in Grande Prairie

Grande Prairie RCMP is warning the public about an influx of calls from scammers pretending to represent the Canadian Revenue Agency.

Authorities say suspects are calling individuals over the phone claiming to represent the CRA, and are asking for personal information and going as far as requesting money under the fake threat of arrest if they don’t pay up.

Mounties say there are a few ways you can keep yourself safe in nearly any potential scam situation:

-Do not share personal information over the phone.
-Be aware of unsolicited calls.
-Don’t feel pressured to make a quick decision.
-Find the actual phone number through a trusted source and call the department directly.
-Be aware of your own personal situation.

The Canadian Revenue Agency states its agents will never ask for any form of payment via E-Transfer, nor will they ever ask for information about your passport, health card, or driver’s license.
