RCMP encourage back to school safety

Most students across the Peace region are headed back to school Tuesday. School zones will be in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a speed limit of 30 kilometres an hour.

With more traffic expected, RCMP are reminding drivers to slow down and watch for students at crosswalks. At many schools, crossing guards will also be in place.

Police also encourage students to only walk on sidewalks and cross roads at marked crosswalks and controlled intersections. If there isn’t a sidewalk, walk on the left hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic staying as far away as possible.

RCMP also ask parents to come up with a safe route for their children to take to school and to tell them not to take shortcuts or jaywalk. If meeting their child at the bus stop after school, they shouldn’t wait across the street, as an excited child may dash across.

“The Alberta RCMP reminds everyone that road safety is a shared responsibility,” the organization says in a release. “Do your part this back to school season to make sure students and adults get to school and work without a scratch.”
