Local teen headed to taekwondo nationals

A young athlete from Grande Prairie is competing in the Canadian Taekwondo Championships in Calgary this weekend. 15 year old Shay-Lean Lindstrom qualified for nationals with a silver medal at provincials last month.

The grade 10 St. Joe’s student is already a second degree black belt and already has her sights set on both the Pan Am and the 2020 Olympic Games. She trains with Champion Gym, which merged with Grande Prairie Taekwondo earlier this year.

Champion Gym saw other success at provincials as well, with Conner Normandeau taking gold in advanced sparring, Liam Sweeney winning bronze in sparring and silver in patterns. Alexandra and Mills earned silver in sparring and patterns while Cameron Mills took silver in patterns and bronze in sparring.

Shay-Lean will compete in the 55 to 59 kilogram weight category at nationals today through Sunday.
