Direct Energy charged with violating fair business practices

Two separate complaints have led to charges against Direct Energy Marketing. The company, which services Grande Prairie and other communities in the Peace, is accused of not giving a refund in the legislated amount of time after furnace contract was cancelled in October 2014.

Another complaint accuses Direct Energy of putting a consumer into a contract even after they say they tried to cancel within the legislated 10-day period. Other charges include using a contract that doesn’t have all of the needed clauses, and not refunding a deposit within 15 days of cancellation.

If found guilty of four counts of violating fair business practices, the company could face up to two years in prison and a maximum fine of $300,000.
