One of the most unique golf tournaments in Grande Prairie is back. The KMSC Charity Golf Tournament tees off today in its new location of the Grande Prairie Golf and County Club, in partnership with RE/MAX Northern Realty. It’s been dubbed the “United Way” of golf tournaments, as tournament chair Lyle Carlstrom explains a different local non-profit is stationed at each hole.
“As people go around, they learn about their community through the not-for-profits, and some of them have actually volunteered to be on the boards of not-for-profits, so it’s been a really great synergy and we hope to keep the magic going.”
In addition to the location change, KMSC Law also partnered up with the RE/MAX Longball competition, held Saturday and Sunday with two-time world long drive champ Jamie Sadlowski. He was at the Grande Prairie Golf and Country Club for the RE/MAX long drive competition, and spent the day Monday meeting with organizers and coaching young players.
“When I was a kid, to me, golf was kind of boring. It wasn’t upbeat; it was kind of like a boring three or four hour walk. This will be upbeat; we’ll hit some trick shots for them and blow a watermelon up on a board and hopefully get some smiles out of them. It’s definitely different than a regular round of golf.”
Local hockey fans may also recognize his name as the former captain of the Bonnyville Pontiacs.
Last year the event raised more than $77,000, and it’s hoped the tournament will raise more than six figures for the 18 non-profits it supports.
