Grande Prairie city council has approved the 2023-2025 Indigenous Relations Framework in an effort for the city to advance toward reconciliation and rectify the legacy of residential schools. The Indigenous Relations Framework will focus on 29 action items responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls-to-Action.
Mayor Jackie Clayton says they value the importance of being active partners in healing and reconciliation with the indigenous community.
“The endorsement of the Indigenous Relations Framework demonstrates City Council’s commitment to our Indigenous community and ensuring their perspective, voice, and experience guide our actions,” says Clayton. “We are eager to see the changes that the framework will guide in the coming years.”
Indigenous Relations Advisor Warren Nekurak says ensuring the Indigenous community is involved and has input in creating the solution is the step to reconciliation.
“Connection to the Indigenous community during the development of the Indigenous Relations Framework was critical. My gratitude goes to the many community members who shared their thoughts, experiences, and solutions with the City during the creation of the Indigenous Relations Framework.”
According to the city, the action items are divided into five focus areas: Building Connections, Community Culture, Education & Acknowledgement, Commerce & Creativity, and City Services.
