Grande Prairie saw six opioid related deaths between December and January

Six people died due to a fatal opioid overdose in Grande Prairie between December 2022 and January 2023. December had the highest number of deaths with four recorded. According to data from the Alberta Substance Use Surveillance System, all six deaths were linked to non-pharmaceutical opioids.

The deaths bring the total number of fatal drug poisonings from January 1st to December 31, 2022 to 43. In comparison to the same time in 2021, there has been one fewer drug poisoning-related death reported in the city. July saw the fewest drug poisoning-related deaths in 2022 with zero, with March and May recording the most reported at six each.
