Grande Prairie first Alberta municipality to recycle Nespresso capsules

Grande Prairie Nespresso drinkers can now recycle their capsules. The coffee company has teamed up with Aquatera Utilities to make the city the first Alberta municipality to try its Green Bag program.

“When introduced to the Green Bag program earlier this spring, there was no question that Grande Prairie wanted to be part of this innovative solution,” says Mayor Jackie Clayton.

“We are excited to offer this new curbside recycling program,” adds Aquatera CEO Vaughn Bend. “Nespresso bringing this Green Bag initiative forward in Grande Prairie highlights their confidence in our collective commitment to sustainability and extended producer responsibility.”

Those taking part will need to be a member of the Nespresso Club. They can put their used aluminum Nespresso capsules in a recyclable green bag placed beside or on top of their blue bag when they take it to the curb for pickup. A drop-off point will also be available at an undisclosed location in the city.

Once the bags are collected, they’ll be sent to a location where they will go through a process that separates the coffee grounds from the aluminum, which will be recycled. The grounds are turned into compost for local farms.

It’s reported all of the program costs are covered by Nespresso. It came into effect Thursday.
