GP Firefighters offering new youth leadership award

The Grande Prairie Firefighters Charitable Foundation has launched a new leadership award for grade 12 students.

Firefighter Chris Renyk says they wanted to make sure they weren’t creating just another academic scholarship.

So we decided to create an award instead, which opened up the platform for a lot of grade 12 students that may not have had the grades, but the grades definitely don’t reflect whether or not you can come up with a charitable idea to benefit your community.”

Candidates will submit a business plan for how they would use $1,500 to better their community, and the winner gets that money to carry it out, as well as the same amount put towards their post-secondary education.

“As we get older as adults, we kind of get a little bit more jaded in today’s society, and we forget what it was like to be a grade 12 student, where these kids see the world from different eyes; a little more optimistic, a little bit more open-minded, and much more creative than we are now.”

Plans are due by March 27th, and then Renyk says they plan to help them improve them to get the best results.
