It's officially flu season in Alberta

Seven people have died from the flu in the province so far this season, including one from the North Zone.

Alberta Health Services is again encouraging residents to get immunized, like more than 80,000 people in our region have done so far.

Out of the 219 confirmed cases of influenza in Alberta, only 13 have been northern residents, with five having to be hospitalized.

Overall, AHS’ Senior Medical Officer of Health Dr. Gerry Predy says outbreaks were initially sporadic, but flu season has now officially begun.

He stresses that it takes two weeks after getting the flu shot to be fully protected, so the earlier the better to stop further spread of the disease.
