Murray Toews named 24th Grande Prairie Legends of Hockey inductee

A local hockey legend now has two more awards to add to his shelf. Murray Toews is set to become the 24th Legend of Grande Prairie Hockey and the first person to win the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Toews was born in Grande Prairie in 1967. Growing up, he played in every level of minor hockey in both Wembley and Grande Prairie including playing five years of Junior A hockey with the Grande Prairie North Stars. As a North Star, he had 190 goals and 271 assists for 461 points.

As the years passed, Toews coached minor hockey while continuing to play senior hockey. Recently, he is known for playing a part in reviving the Grande Prairie Storm, during its Save Our Storm campaign in 2016. He and a group of investors stepped up to help save the team after it announced it needed $200,000 to cover unpaid debts and reach the end of the season. A few months later he became the team’s president.

Hockey Legends Grande Prairie has also given the executive its first Lifetime Achievement Award. It recognizes a person who has contributed to the growth of hockey in Grande Prairie. Toews will be honoured at a pre-game ceremony at Revolution Place on January 25th at 7:30 p.m.
