UPDATED: Downtown rehab work starts Thursday

UPDATE: The city says temporary water lines will be installed in the north and south alleyways along 100 Avenue between 100 Street and 102 Street. The work will begin Thursday and run until May 20, 2018. There will be no impact to traffic or water service due to this work.

The rapid snow melt means construction downtown is likely to start on time. At an information session Tuesday the city revealed the timelines for the work that will go into the third phase of the Downtown Rehabilitation Project.

Monty Haughian, who is acting as the city’s dedicated representative for the project, says they just received the schedule from the contractor.

“We have preliminary dates that they’re going to start placing temporary water to the businesses that will be affected first, possibly next week. Their initial date of the middle of May, May 14, is their construction start date. So we are starting to get really involved.”

Haughian says each business has a different concern and they are doing their best to address them as the arise. He says access is one of the biggest concern.

“We are going to maintain front access as best we can. There are days where it will have to be it will have to be closed in front. Some businesses have rear access, some do not. Its a major concern in and of itself.”

The city is putting more of an emphasis on signage during this phase. Signs on the end of each block will list businesses located along that portion with arrows to indicate access points. They are also looking at potential flag signage to help the businesses mark back entrances as well.

The city has already committed to prioritizing communication during the third phase. Haughian says they are working hard to share timelines with businesses when work may impact them directly.

Phase 3 encompasses 100 Avenue between 100 Street and 102 Street. Previously Haughian said there are some minor things to still be completed from last summers work, mostly in phase two. He said that included benches and some trees, work that was unable to be completed due to weather.
