Wildfire season begins March 1st

Although there is still snow on the ground, wildfire season officially starts March 1st. Since wrapping up on October 31st, fire crews responded to two fires in the Grande Prairie region that burned .11 hectares.

Last season, there were 73 fires that burned around 137 hectares in the Grande Prairie Forest Protection Area. Across the province, there was 1,341 fires that burned 611,464.70 hectares including the blaze that ripped through Fort McMurray in May.

There are currently two fires burning in the province that are under control. In Grande Prairie region, the current wildfire hazard is sitting at low with no fires burning.

Starting March 1st, anything larger than a small cooking or warming fire will need a permit.
