Interest in downtown lot for hospital parking expansion

The city wants to open up the conversation on what should go on a city owned lot downtown. The section of land located near city hall has been empty for years and was recently rezoned in March to allow for flexibility on what could be developed there. AHS would like to pitch in money to create extra parking on the lot which they already lease land that is attached.

Mayor Bill Given says Administration was directed to find out what the appropriate use for the land would be.

“I think there was a process that started a number of years ago in trying to address parking related concerns adjacent to the QEII hospital. Currently, there are challenges with both staff and patient parking. The recommendation was really in response to those concerns”

City administration will now be looking at what would be the best fit for the land.

“City Council Committee asked Administration to bring back a process to ensure that all those uses and potential uses. We want to engage all stakeholders and parties in how we can move forward.”

A developer has posed interest in building houses on the land. There has also been concerns voiced by residents that would like to keep the area as a green space.
