Damaging tornado touches down in Girouxville area

A damaging tornado briefly spun up and touched down in the Girouxville area Monday night.

The storm drove through the area around 8 p.m., according to Alberta Storm Watch, with data from the Environment Canada weather station in Jean Côté citing ambient temperatures and dew points at 15 degrees Celsius leading up to the touchdown. That helped create unsettled conditions, and along with instability, a severe thunderstorm cell.

While no reports of injuries have been made public, a handful of buildings have suffered damage to roofs and other parts of the structures.

We are waiting on official confirmation from Environment Canada on the strength of the tornado, as well as a potential path of the storm.
