38-year-old charged in connection to alleged 2024 Valleyview hit-and-run

RCMP have arrested and charged one Valleyview resident following a 17-month-month-long investigation in connection to an alleged hit-and-run.

Police say on Dec. 21, 2024, at 6:30 a.m., Valleyview RCMP received a report of a deceased person on the edge of the roadway on Highway 43 between Valleyview and Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.

During the 17-month investigation, police say they conducted many witness statements, and with help from the Western Alberta District General Investigation Section, and 10 different RCMP Detachments and Units, totaling over 35 members and support staff, were able to identify and arrest the suspect on May 27.

The 38 year-old male from Valleyview has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and failure to stop. The accused was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody, and is set to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in Valleyview on June 1.

“We would like to thank the community members of Sturgeon Lake who helped support this investigation” said Sgt. Angus Kelly of the WAD GIS. “Their assistance was invaluable in getting answers for the family.”
