Northwestern Polytechnic welcomed its newest addition of a fully functional anatomy lab in partnership with The University of Alberta’s Northern Alberta Medical Program (NAMP), on Friday March 20th.
This new facility marks a major milestone in expanding access to medical education outside of major cities. Cadaver dissection has been an essential part of the NAMP Program for over 100 years, and now students can continue that tradition right here in Grande Prairie.
Assistant Dean for the Northern Alberta Medical Program Dr. Martin says that with having this new lab at NWP this is a unique change to UofA.
To make a cadaver lab as usable as it needs to be to provide state of the art learning, it needs to be able to house enough students, and wide enough to demonstrate.
This now represents the first time when a student could achieve an entire medical degree without ever needing to be in Edmonton.”
The program has also received a new, Anatomage table, that was donated by the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation.
The table provides a highly detailed and accurate look at the human body, allowing students to explore life-sized anatomy, visualize organs in motion and see how different systems in the body interact. According to the Director of Operations at the Hospital Foundation Brittany Kelsey, the table was procured by NWP in January and has been fully instituted into the curriculum.
These new additions to NWP will provide critical education to the students of the Medical Program, other health care programs at the Northwestern Polytechnic and other health care facilities in and around Grande Prairie.
