Grande Prairie cat cafe surpasses 1500 in-store adoptions

Whiskers Cat Café has been open for six and a half years. During that time, it has partnered with Bandaged Paws and the Peace River SPCA to help cats find their forever homes.

For the first five years, Whiskers was partnered only with Bandaged Paws. During that time, the café says it helped facilitate 1,400 adoptions for Bandaged Paws. The owner of the café, Angie Plante, said in the past year Whiskers transitioned to helping only the Peace River SPCA, recently reaching the 100th adoption milestone with that organisation.

“We started a partnership with the Peace River SPCA to help out other cats in the community. They have such a small rescue there, and there are not as many people there to adopt,” she said.

Plante said she has visited other cat cafés like hers in bigger cities across the country, some of which have had only about 500 adoptions over eight years.

Plante opened the café in 2019. She said when they first opened, she never thought they would reach such an impressive milestone.

“It’s surreal. I never ever imagined we would hit that many. It’s super exciting. I just want to thank everyone that has come in and adopted from us and helped us hit that number. Without the community, we wouldn’t have ever done that.”

According to Plante, the café is currently seeing about seven adoptions a week, and she believes the business is the biggest adoption provider in the Peace Region.

If you are interested in adopting a furry friend for your household, applications can be filed on the Peace River SPCA website or completed in the café.
