Portion of Wapiti Nordic Trail to temporarily close for FireSmart mitigation work

Users of the Wapiti Nordic Trails will see some work in the area over the next few months to complete some FireSmart mitigation in the area.

The County of Grande Prairie is set to carry out wildfire mitigation work in the area between Jan. 19 and March 31, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to reduce wildfire risk.

Crews will treat nearly 17 hectares of public forested land, focusing on reducing natural fuel sources to help slow the spread of wildfires and protect nearby communities, infrastructure and natural areas. The work includes tree thinning and pruning, selective timber harvesting, removal of deadfall and mulching of debris.

Trail users may notice increased activity and equipment in the area, including log hauling near Range Road 63 south of Township Road 704 and along Township Road 704.
