A family physician is bringing a menopause support model she learned in the United Kingdom to Grande Prairie.
Dr. Nadine Murigu, a local physician who moved from the U.K. earlier this year, said menopause cafés were common where she previously lived. The gatherings allow women to meet and discuss the challenges of menopause free of charge.
Since arriving in Grande Prairie, Murigu said she has noticed a lack of support and accessible information for women seeking help with menopause.
“I’ve been seeing a need in our community for good quality access to menopause information so that women can be knowledgeable,” she said.
Murigu said informal settings such as cafés work well for these types of discussions based on her experience.
“This model empowers women to access this information, in a safe space like a cafe it works well in my experience,” she said.
The first event is scheduled for Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Grande Prairie Primary Care Network. Murigu said a second session will be held Feb. 21 at the Grande Prairie Public Library for those unable to attend. She hopes to host the cafés monthly.
