City asking for feedback over ATCO gas franchise fees

The City of Grande Prairie is asking the community to share feedback on their thoughts on the decision city council made to raise the gas franchise fee from 25 to just over 31 per cent in 2026.

According to officials, the monthly franchise fee for an average resident in Grande Prairie is expected to jump to $16.35 a month, the fee is applied to a distribution tariff, which typically consist of distribution and transmission charges.

The ATCO Gas and Pipelines company will be filing an application to the Alberta Utilities Commission to request acknowledgment about the franchise fee for the City of Grande Prairie.

The city is asking the community to express their support, concerns, or objections for the change by either writing, emailing or calling the city or ATCO.

The city will be taking feedback up until December 26th. The change in franchise fee is expected to go into effect on February 1, 2026.
