Celebration of man’s best friend in Grande Prairie

Modelled after a day dedicated to the animals in Nepal, a Dog Celebration is being held in Grande Prairie this Saturday. One of the organizers Jessica Minns says the idea is to show how the pets become a part of the family.

“I think that people love their dogs in the same way they love their family members. I mean, you have dogs in your life for sometimes 15, 20 years, so you just want to show them you appreciate them and that’s what we’re going to do; anything to make the dogs have a great time.”

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. by the South Bear Creek Dog Park, the festivities will include pet photos, games with prizes and a barbecue, along with a garage sale. All donations will benefit the SPCA and Bandaged Paws Animal Rescue. However, Minns says the event is about more than just raising money.

“To go out there and to educate people and let people know that the SPCA and Bandaged Paws do amazing things for animals in this community, and if we can just spread the word to help people understand what a big influence they have on animals, and even people, then our job is done.”

She stresses the day isn’t just for dog owners, but all dog lovers. The hope is to make this an annual event to help out the organizations who take care of our furry friends.
