Wildfire smoke again prompts special air quality statement

A special air quality statement is once again in effect for the Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyview region, as well as the Peace River – Fairview – High Prairie – Manning region. Environment Canada says smoke is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility.

“Wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health even at low concentrations. Continue to take actions to protect your health and reduce exposure to smoke.”

People with lung disease such as asthma or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are noted to be at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke.

As of noon Wednesday, the Peace Airshed Zone Association lists Grande Prairie’s Air Quality Health Index at 4 or Moderate and Beaverlodge at 2 or Low.
