People can remember their coworkers, friends and family that lost their lives at work at the Annual Day of Mourning this Friday. Chair of Grande Prairie and Area Safe Communities Donna Kulba says it is a day to reflect on how to stay safe on the job site.
“It is always a best practice to review hazard assessments. You want to make sure they are current and up to date. Make sure you are always aware of your surroundings.”
She adds that all workplace injuries are preventable.
In 2016, at least one person lost their lives while on the job in the city. The worker was delivering cranes when he collapsed and could not be resuscitated in mid-July. In late July of that year, two workers passed away when their construction vehicle rolled into a ditch.
All together, there was 144 people who lost their lives in a work related injury or illness in 2016 across the province. This is up 19 from the year before.
In February of 2017, a man was pronounced dead at the scene of a work site after being crushed by logs.
The remembrance ceremony is held at Grande Prairie and Area Safe Communities on 92nd Street at 10:45 a.m. on April 28th. A moment of silence will be included at 11 a.m.
