Late Entry French Immersion option open to public school students

0

Grande Prairie Public School District will begin offering a Late Entry French Immersion program for students as of this fall.

Students that missed out on the original French Immersion entry point at Kindergarten will have the chance to enter it at Grade 5.

Superintendent Carol Anne McDonald says a series of four meetings held recently to explore interest in the Late Entry option showed positive results.

“Each of the meetings we’ve had many people interested in the program, so we now have 14 confirmed students. Our board had said initially if we got 12 to 15 confirmed, we would go with the program.”

All core subjects will be taught in French, with subjects like music and Phys. Ed taught in English.

It works out to a 75-25 split between French and English subjects.

The Late Entry program will be run out of École Montrose.

Families can sign up their children for the program through either the school or the public school board office.

McDonald says they will begin the process soon of hiring a teacher for the Late Entry program.

She says they want to make sure that they have a qualified teacher with lots of experience, adding they want the right fit in front of the students.

GP100 Soap Box Derby set for Grande Prairie's centennial

0

It’s a reminder of when life was a little simpler.

The Grande Prairie Rotary After Five club is celebrating the City’s centennial with a traditional soap box derby.

Member Lionel Frey explains youth aged 9 to 14 can sign up as drivers, but the race can really involve the whole family.

“Not only the race day itself, but even leading up to building and designing the cart, whole families can get involved in that. So, it’s a family activity from design stage right to race day.”

The race will take place on 95th Street, west of Hillside School, on May 31st.

Frey says the slope is gradual, and should make for some exciting races.

The go-carts are available for sponsorship, and will sport a variety of fun looks.

“We’ve got one that’s designed as Fred Flintstone’s car; another that’s designed as kind of more of a racey style car,” says Frey, “so we’ll see all sorts of designs put forth by sponsors – business sponsors in the community – and they can design them any way they like.”

Anyone interested in signing up can visit www.GP100.ca.

“I watched a little bit of tape on him and he likes to do some boxing which is fine.  He is a southpaw which means his dominant hand is his left hand, so it is going to take a bit of an adjustment to get used to the footwork and which way to circle.”

CFL players inspire local students

0

Members of the Peace Wapiti Titans have gotten a little inspiration ahead of next season from a couple of pro athletes.

J.R. LaRose of the B.C. Lions and Jed Roberts, formerly of the Edmonton Eskimos, paid a visit to the high school this afternoon share their stories with the football and basketball players.

LaRose says he tours schools as he feels his story of overcoming adversity is relatable.

“I think every kid is going to faced with adversity at some point throughout their life. I think for us, throughout our stories, we’ve faced it and we’ve overcome it. So we just want to instill hope in kids that they can overcome anything no matter how big it seems through hard work and dedication and fighting through it.

LaRose grew up without a father and with a mother who was an addict.

He told the youth that if they surround themselves with positive people and learn from their mistakes, their dreams are within reach.

Their visit to Peace Wapiti Academy was the last of eight in the Peace Region throughout the week, as the first of two First Nations, Métis, and Inuit school tours scheduled for Peace Wapiti Public School Division this year.

Roberts, who is Métis, hopes he and LaRose, whose mother is Cree, have shown the students their dreams can come true if they work hard and persevere.

“There are some kids at the schools we went to that are foster kids that might not feel that sense of belonging and feeling like a sense of sort of being up against something. We’re just trying to remind them that it doesn’t really matter; as long as you stay focused like J.R. says, you can do pretty much anything you put your mind to.”

The second FNMI school tour is set for May with former NHL players.

Lasell adds they could have the full 18 open in about a week, again if the weather co-operates.

Grovedale Fire Department making good use of new command unit

0

It will go a long way during those cold northern Alberta nights.

The Grovedale Fire Department is now using its new command unit, which is equipped with everything from a full power generator to a coffee machine to assist the firefighters in disaster situations.

Manager of Protective Services for the M-D of Greenview Jeff Francis explains it’s like a home away from home during rescue calls.

“It’s basically to support those volunteer fire fighters, especially in the winter system, and the whole area. It’s such a vast area and if there’s a big incident going on, to have an incident command post out in the middle of nowhere, this would support those kinds of incidents very well.”

Greenview Council purchased the vehicle for $398,000, and is considered a good investment as it will serve a vast area in many different situations.

It is the first of its kind in North America.
