Local racquetball player shows promise at nationals in Grande Prairie

0

Team Canada’s roster for the 2014 World Junior Racquetball Championships was set this weekend in Grande Prairie.

The top two from each age division from U14 to U18 will be headed to Columbia in October.

They’re a little young yet, but two athletes from Grande Prairie also competed at nationals.

Kai Reum won first in the U12 Challenger Cup, and Tournament Director Jeff Buller says he shows a lot of potential.

“He’s only been playing for four or five months. He did impress a lot of the coaches there throughout the week, just on the basis that he’s hardly played. I hope he sticks with it; he’s got a lot of natural talent.”

Kai also earned a silver medal with teammate Brayden Buller-aubin in the U12 doubles.

The tournament was held at the Eastlink Centre, and Buller says the response to the quality of courts has been very positive.

He adds he hopes a competition of its calibre will help spread the sport of racquetball further both in Grande Prairie and across Canada.

“My hope is that it gives the sport some exposure here, but I think really what it’s doing is it’s just giving more exposure on a national scale. I know that Grande Prairie’s going to be officially on the map.”

RCMP rolls out phone survey

0

Over the next two weeks the local detachment will be getting in tough with Grande Prairie residents to get their thoughts and opinions on crime in policing in the city. The survey will help with the creation of the RCMP strategic plan for the Grande Prairie and Beaverlodge detachments. Police say there has been some fraudulent phone activity in the city recently, so the pollster will make sure to identify themselves as the Population Research Laboratory from the University of Alberta and will not be asking any personally identifying questions. Grande Prairie Superintendent Ray Noble is hoping they will have the strategy finished and ready for presentation by sometime in June.

South Peace Regional Archivist Leslie Gordon says this year’s tour will be a little different, and won’t just focus on the cemetery’s more well known inhabitants.

“One of my favourites on this tour is our first garbage collector. It’s just something that’s necessary to the running of a city but not necessarily a famous person at the time.”

Registration for the two tours is limited to 20 people each, though Gordon says they will consider adding more tours if there is enough interest. They will be held on June 11 and June 16. It’s free to take part, you just have get in touch with the archives to do so.

Career Expo draws in student crowds from across the Peace

0

More than 1700 students from across the Peace region descended on the Entrec Centre yesterday afternoon for CAREERexpo Grande Prairie. The event gave students a exposure to 70 companies and post-secondary institutions from across the province. Show Manager Patti Stewart says the expo aims to give kids a more hands on approach to career investigation.

“It’s not a matter of just walking past booths and having conversations, but rather they can actually touch and feel and get to understand a little bit more about certain careers by just getting that much closer to the subject.”

Stewart says the companies they do see wanting to take part are the ones that are looking at the big picture.

“We are looking for businesses who are willing to invest in the youth of the community with a potential for a return maybe five or six years down the road. If we have another goal associated with this show, it’s to ensure that kids realize that there’s so many opportunities right in their home community.”

Student attendance at Career Expo Grande Prairie tripled from last year, while the amount of exhibits doubled. Stewart says the numbers are encouraging, and she hopes to see it grow even more in future years.

Grande Prairie Rage N Fyre roller derby home opener this weekend

0

Rookies and veterans alike will be strapping on their skates for this weekend’s roller derby double header at the Sexsmith Arena.

The Grande Prairie Rage N Fyre are hosting E-Ville Roller Derby out of Edmonton at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

But first, derby girls with less than 10 games experience will face off in a rookie scrimmage at 5.

Andrea Golany, who goes by the derby name Nasty B, says the contact sport is open to anyone willing to try.

“Anybody can play roller derby; it doesn’t matter what your shape, what your size, or what your age. We have ladies that range right from just barely past the 18 mark up to in their forties. If you like to have a good time and challenge yourself, both physically and mentally, and participate in team sports, you’re a candidate.”

The sport can be confusing for newbies, but as Nasty B explains, points are scored by the “jammer” lapping the other team.

“You’ll have three other players from the same team on the track – they’re blockers. There’s one other lady on the track on the same team with a stripe on her helmet. She’s the pivot and she’s the only person who can become a jammer in the event that the jammer gets tired out or gets stuck in a hard spot.”

The blockers try and stop the jammers from getting through, and yes, it’s a contact sport.

If that’s still hard to picture, they’ll try and explain it all before the match.

The event is both kid friendly and licensed. If you’re feeling adventurous, suicide seating is available on the floor for adults.

“I was in there and they had really weird, blue wallpaper and it wasn’t a happy place to be for me, and I asked my mom and they said that maybe we could paint this; maybe we could make it better and happier place for children to be.”

Her family started up the Melissa Makeover Foundation, which has so far raised around $88,000 for paint, TVs, and laptops for young people with disabilities.

18 year old award winner Alexandre Bilodeau says his time volunteering has made a huge impact on his own life, as well as those he’s helped.

Donations pouring in to help family of young crash victim

0

In just five hours, nearly $5,000 has been raised to help the family of a young boy who was killed in a car accident in Grande Prairie.

Four year old Red passed away this morning at the Stollery Children’s Hospital from a head injury.

His mother’s co-worker, Stacy Vanier, has set up a donation page on www.gofundme.com.

“The family is having some financial difficulties and my goal here is to help them, not only with funeral expenses, but also with time lost from work, hopefully some counselling, and their travel expenses that they had going to and from Edmonton.”

Red ‘s mother was seriously injured in the crash, but has since been released, while his sister escaped with reportedly minor injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that is believed to have hit two others before crossing several lanes of traffic on 116th Avenue during rush hour Tuesday morning was also taken to hospital, but an update on their condition is not available.

Vanier says she’s moved by the support so far.

“On the Go-Fund-Me page I had a goal of $3,000 kind of thinking that might have been a little far-fetched, but in three short hours, we had already raised over $2,000. I’m overwhelmed by the community’s generosity.”

People can make donations on the “Angel Red funeral donations” page online or in person at Points West Living.
