UPDATE: Fire at Sexsmith grain elevators

UPDATE #3: The fire at the Sexsmith grain elevator is now under control, and firefighters remain on the scene to check for hot spots. The County of Grande Prairie says while there were signs of flames in the adjacent elevator, crews were able to put them out. 100th Street from 99th Avenue to 100th Avenue and Elevator Road will remain closed for an indefinite amount of time. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. 

UPDATE #2: The County of Grande Prairie says one grain elevator has collapsed and is contained. Crews are now working to limit the damage to the adjacent elevator. 39 firefighters are on the scene from several County stations.

UPDATE #1: Our reporter on the scene says firefighters appear to be spending their resources on saving the train station and the remaining elevators. Snow on the roof may be helping. Grant Berg with the Sexsmith Museum Society says the elevator still standing is one that has been slated for preservation. The County of Grande Prairie has asked the public to stay away from the scene due to safety concerns.

Emergency responders are currently on the scene of a fire at the grain elevators in Sexsmith.

We have very little information at this time, but will update when we learn more.

Grant Berg with the Sexsmith Museum Society says the town was the grain capital of the British Empire between 1939 and 1949.

At its peak there were seven grain elevators, and before today there were three remaining

The society had gotten approval to preserve one, and the other two were slated to eventually be brought down.
