Grande Prairie man facing life in jail for 2017 murder

A Grande Prairie man is facing a life sentence for the 2017 murder of a man southeast of Peace River.

In a Peace River courtroom earlier this month, Blake Murphy was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole for 10 years and a lifetime firearms ban for the first-degree murder of Lawrence Robert Butt.

The man’s remains were found in a burned-out travel trailer on Reno Road East on May 17th. An autopsy determined that he was murdered but his cause of death has not been released.

Four others were also facing charges in the case. In August 2017, one of the people, Bonnie Casselton was sentenced to 90 days in jail for accessory to murder and later released after serving her time.
