County looks to enter discussions over new Wapiti River crossing

The County of Grande Prairie is looking to open up talks with the MD of Greenview to build another crossing over the Wapiti River.

Director of Public Works Dale Van Volkingburgh says council tasked administration to not only involve their colleagues at the MD of Greenview but also potentially widen the net.

“To go across in that Range Road 90 area, with the County of Grande Prairie, MD of Greenview and maybe some industry partnerships, because there really is only one bridge crossing [over the Wapiti River]”

The current bridge crossing on Highway 40 is a major thoroughfare for the entire region, and Van Volkingburgh says a potential second bridge would make sense.

“It does line up with some infrastructure to the south in the Grovedale area with secondary highways and stuff like that, so there are some thoughts that this could be a good connection.”

The discussion about a bridge is one of a handful of separate transportation-related requests handed out by council recently, however, no timeline as to when the report will be heading back to county councillors has been made public.
