32-foot Christmas tree makes landfall in Hythe

It was a strange sight in the skies over Hythe this weekend. A 32-foot Christmas tree was flown by helicopter from Demmitt and dropped in the middle of Hythe’s main intersection. This is the first time in 30 years that there has been a tree in the Village and Mayor Brian Peterson says he’s happy he could be the one to bring the tradition back.

“It had been so long and it was something that I had from my childhood that I wanted to bring back quite passionately.”

The tree was anonymously donated by a farmer in Demmitt. The spruce, which now sits at the intersection of 100 Street and 101 Avenue, was originally supposed to be 34-feet tall but two feet had to be cut off in order to lift it.

Once it was put up, volunteers helped put 2000 lights as well as a homemade star on the tree. Peterson says it was definitely a team effort.

“There was a lot of people participating to make the hot dogs and to get the firewood here and cordon off the area. Even to get the tree up I think you’ve seen how many of us were scrambling underneath trying to get that thing in place. It takes a lot of people to make something like this happen.”

Peterson is now looking for members of the community to bring their own ornaments to decorate the tree. A decorating and lighting event will take place on December 8th.
