Smoke alarms help limit damage from townhouse fire

Firefighters are crediting working smoke alarms with preventing more fire damage to a townhouse. The Grande Prairie Fire Department says it was called to reports of a blaze in one of the units at Northgate Place around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

When fire trucks arrived at the complex on 111 Street and 105 Avenue, there was smoke throughout the townhouse and a fire in the second-floor bathroom. It was quickly put out and didn’t spread to any other homes.

“Although no one was home at the time of the fire, working smoke alarms alerted neighbours to the fire, prompting them to call 9-1-1,” says Captain Dennis Mossey. “Their actions ensured a timely response by the fire department, limiting the fire damage.”

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
